Adobe released the official announcement date for Adobe CS5.  They will be kicking it off on April 12, 2010.  The actual release date for sales should be a month later per their past track record.

Today, they released the first video showing off a new feature titled “Content Aware Fill”.

The above image is the before and after taken from the video of the last example they cover.  The before image is a compilation of images of a panorama, stitched together.  The resulting issue is not having enough photos to fill in to make a full framed image.

What we use to do is either use clone to “stretch” out the areas or simply just crop the image in the center removing a lot of the image.

With Content Aware Fill, Photoshop interpolates the image and fills in the ‘empty’ space with it’s best interpretation.

Enlargement of left hand corner showing detail.

Perfect?  No, not yet at least, but it does 90% of the work for you.  You can see from the detail to the left where you would still need to do a bit of cloning and healing brush to work out a bit of the errors.

Next obvious question is, does this functionality show up in Photoshop Express?  As this feature will undoubtedly be used to “magically” fix so many old photos we all have in shoe boxes around the house!

One Response to Adobe CS5 Photoshop Content Aware Fill

  1. To be honest I've been using a camera for as long as I can remember and almost all the time bring one with me. It won't be true to claim I've understood all the very complicated details that make a professional photograph. However I am actually confindent I can handle almost anything, even a flying saucer.

It's the retouching that is bugging me. I just can't get used to the software part. The final picture usually seems unnatural in my opinion. Friends assure me I am really good but I can't decide whether it's true or just a compliment. The models themselves are always happy with my creations in all honesty but it's to be expected. Picking the right gadgets is nothing more than just theory found in literature. Not rarely despite the fact that I am trying to pay attention I end up with a bit of a smeared contrast, exposure or unadjusted brightness. I mix up the wheels combining the colors sometimes. It can be actually very frustrating but lament ends here.
